LocHoSiM

Locomotion of fossil hominines using musculoskeletal simulation of the forelimbs

Reassessing the functions of forelimbs in australopiths
and early members of the genus Homo in order to clarify the adaptive and evolutionary context
for the emergence of our genus.

Principal Investigator

Type of project

The LocHoSiM research project is funded by the region Nouvelle Aquitaine, 2020-2025 (december).

Research questions

LOCHOSIM aims at: i) developing the first model of the forelimb muscle and skeleton in fossil hominins, ii) studying the biomechanics and osteology of climbing activities in humans and chimpanzees, iii) apply to newly-described fossil hominins. All these data will allow testing the stability of fossil hominines forelimbs during simulated climbing activities.

Some results

The project will be initiated with Alicia Blasi-Toccacceli’s PhD thesis, from the 1sr october 2020.

Partnership

The research project LocHoSiM articulates with the ANR project HOMTECH and the program OGRE. It benefits from  a local network composed of several members of PALEVOPRIM lab (coordination), the RoBioSS team (Institut PPrime) and the zoological park « La Vallée des Singes ».
