Microtomograph

Imaging: Microtomograph

Description

This X-ray equipment is associated with both IC2MP and PALEVOPRIM (collaboration Arnaud Mazurier). It is a EasyTom XL Duo microtomograph composed of two sources: a closed micro-focus X-ray tube (spot size ~ 5 microns) and an open nano-focus X-ray tube (spot size ~ 0.75 microns) for image acquisition of a broad range of objects. The reconstruction of projection image stacks with the software XAct (RX solution) permits to decrease numerous artifacts and to produce high-quality slice images.

Use

Acquisition and processing of 3D images are nowadays at the heart of paleontology as they allow collecting raw data (anatomical virtual models of fossils from collections stored in France and abroad, osteological models for comparative analysis) as well as performing shape analyses (geometric morphometrics, internal structures, fossil reconstitution and retrodeformation…). The microtomograph is an extremely important tool for describing internal and external morphologies with a very high resolution.

Funding

The available material has been acquired by co-fundings from the CNRS, the University of Poitiers and the Poitou-Charentes ex-region (New Aquitaine region).
