Main research question
During my thesis, I study the appendicular skeleton of Afro-European hippopotamoids in order to describe their locomotion and clarify their phylogenetic relationships.
Topics of study
First, I study the only two remaining extant species of this superfamily: the common hippo Hippopotamus amphibius and the Liberian hippo Choeropsis liberiensis.
I also focus on fossil hippopotamines recovered in the Turkana Depression in Kenya and in Ethiopia (in particular from the Plio-Pleistocene Shungura Formation), and from the Djourab Desert in Chad.
Finally, I focus on the stem-group of Hippopotamidae, anthacotheres, from western Europe, Chad, and eastern Africa.
