Magnetostratigraphy

Description

The platform includes a « Spinner » magnetometer JR6-AGICO for measurement of magnetization of rocks, a furnace for thermal demagnetization, an alternating field demagnetizer Molspin, a pulse magnetizer (MMPM10), a magnetic susceptibility meter (Ms-2) for ambient temperature, a system measuring magnetic susceptibility for temperatures comprised between -200° C to + 900 ° C.

Use

The elements of this chain constitute an efficient equipment for carrying out paleomagnetic analyses. The goal is to analyze terrestrial magnetic field reversals that paced Earth history. Applying these analyses to stratigraphic and geological studies – magnetostratigraphy – is a crucial tool for determining the age of fossiliferous sites.

Funding

This material has been acquired by a co-funding from the CNRS and the Poitou-Charentes region.
