New field campaign of the Greek-French team
New field campaign of the Greek-French team of the PICS-CNRS ExParadox project with Gildas Merceron (Palevoprim) and Dimitris S. Kostopoulos (Lab of Geology and Paleontology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) on Dafnero sites from the early Pleistocene (about 2 million years old) in Northern Greece. In the hollow of wild ravines along the Aliakmon River, the deposit again this year provides many fossils as new skulls of carnivores, ruminants… In addition to the aesthetics of such specimens, fossils bear information, notably on paleo-environments prior to the earliest dispersion of the genus Homo out-of-Africa nearly two million years ago.
Excavations and studies of the fossil material also have a pedagogical role for French and Greek students which benefit from the ERASMUS program between our teaching departments SFA, Master Paléontologie, University of Poitiers and Lab of Geology and Paleontology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
