Topic

Feeding ecology and (paleo)environmental characterization of cervid populations: contribution of dental microwears

I investigate feeding ecology and trophic plasticity in cervids. The preferred approach is the analysis of dental microwear textures. A major part of my work consists in studying living populations of ungulates in order to better understand the fossil record. I therefore aim at characterizing the paleoecology and the paleoenvironments of fossil cervid populations. This contributes to a better understanding of the range of ecological responses by living ungulates facing a context of environmental and climatic changes. This is critical to current societal challenges in relation to this context.

Émilie Berlioz is paleontologist, former PhD student and postdoc at the Laboratory PALEVOPRIM and currently postdoc in texture analyses of cervid dental microwear within the ANR projct DeerPal at the Laboratory TRACES in Toulouse. Her work on New-Caledonia cervids was recently awarded a L’Oréal-UNESCO grant from the prestigious program “For Women in Science” of the Fondation L’Oréal.
