Topic
Fossils of carnivorans from the Late Miocene of the Yunnan province, southern China
Dr. Qigao Jiangzuo is an associate Professor at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Beijing. His research focuses on the systematics, phylogeny, biogeography, and functional adaptation of carnivorous mammals (mainly Carnivora), especially from eastern Asia, southeastern Asia island area and North America.
This presentation will focus on the fossil Carnivora from three Late Miocene localities in Yunnan Province, southernmost China. Despite their geographic proximity, these sites exhibit distinct assemblages of carnivore remains, reflecting differences in age and paleoenvironment. Some of the fossils show direct phylogenetic links to extant species for which no previous fossil records were known. These findings provide crucial insights into the divergence time calibration and biogeographic history of several significant extant lineages.
